EVE Trade Run #2: 45M ISK Hauling Hek → Jita Through Rancer (9 Jumps)
EVE trade run from Hek to Jita: 9 jumps through Rancer's notorious gate camp for 45M ISK profit. Honest breakdown of ROI, danger, and why I made double ISK Scout's estimate.
Run #2 · Hek → Jita · 9 jumps · +45M ISK
Rancer has a reputation. Ask anyone on the Hek-to-Jita pipe and they'll tell you the same thing: 0.4 security, permanent gate camp, Tornados waiting for industrial pilots who don't know better. ISK Scout was showing 9 recent kills right on that system. This is New Eden Trade Runs — I load cargo, haul it somewhere it shouldn't go, and report what actually happened. Even when "what actually happened" involves holding cloak and holding my breath.
Run #2 was nine jumps from Hek to Jita 4-4. I made 45M ISK and came home with the ship.
The route ISK Scout handed me
I sorted by ISK-per-jump on ISK Scout — the free EVE trade tool I lean on for this series — and the Hek–Jita run floated up: 58 profitable items, 69.4M total potential profit across the route, 7.7M ISK per jump. On paper, cleaner than my nullsec run.
The danger badge was hard to miss. ISK Scout flagged the route dangerous — 24 recent kills across 10 systems, with Rancer (9 kills) and Perimeter near Jita (12 kills) as the two pinch points.

Loading up at Hek
At Hek VIII — Moon 12 — Boundless Creation Factory, I bought four items. Not the optimizer's full 43-item suggestion — I wanted high-margin items I could clearly track, not a hold full of filler.
| Item | Qty | Unit price | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ukomi Superconductors | 7,000 | 73,300 ISK | 513.1M |
| Condensates | 216 | 20,010 ISK | 4.3M |
| Fermionic Sequencer | 120,000 | ~93 ISK | ~11.2M |
| Compressed Plagioclase III-Grade | 250,000 | 33 ISK | 8.3M |
| Total | ~537.1M |

9 jumps into lowsec (and the gate at Rancer)
The route: Hek (0.8) → Otou (0.3) → Miroitem (0.3) → Rancer (0.4) → Crielere → Ambeke → Fourent → Iyen-Oursta → Perimeter → Jita.
Two systems needed watching: Rancer and the Perimeter gate cluster near Jita. Rancer is the famous one. Perimeter is just high traffic — that's Jita traders getting caught by gankers, not a camp targeting haulers specifically.
I jumped into Rancer and held cloak. There was a Tornado on grid. I sat for 60 seconds and watched. Nothing moved toward me. I aligned, broke cloak at the last second, and hit the gate.
That was it. The 9-kill count was real — someone had a bad day in Rancer recently — but a covert ops ship in that camp is apparently too much work for too little reward. I didn't test my luck by dawdling.
Perimeter was busier but uneventful. Jita local had 1,800 pilots and a dozen profanities in chat. Normal day.
Cashing out at Jita 4-4
Jita IV — Moon 4 — Caldari Navy Assembly Plant. I docked and hit the market. The buy orders were deep.
| Item | Qty | Sell price | Revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ukomi Superconductors | 7,000 | 78,160 ISK | 547.1M |
| Condensates | 216 | 57,020 ISK | 12.3M |
| Fermionic Sequencer | 120,000 | 109 ISK | 13.1M |
| Compressed Plagioclase III-Grade | 250,000 | 38 ISK | 9.6M |
| Total | 582.2M |

Did it actually pay?
| ISK | |
|---|---|
| Buy cost | −537.1M |
| Sell revenue | +582.2M |
| Fees & tax | −included in above |
| Net profit | +45.0M |
| Wallet after | 3,089,098,695 |
45M ISK across 9 jumps is 5.0M ISK per jump — better than Run #1's 3.6M/jump to nullsec, and for a safer (if not safe) route.
The number that caught my attention: ISK Scout's cargo optimizer estimated 19.8M in profit for this run. I ended up with 45M — more than double. That gap came from ignoring the optimizer's 43-item full-cargo suggestion and concentrating capital into four high-upside items instead. The cargo optimizer maximizes ISK/m³ efficiency, which means it fills every cubic meter, including items with thin margins. When you have a 185% margin item and a 5% margin item, the optimizer treats them similarly if they have the same volume-to-profit ratio. Manual selection beat the algorithm here because I was willing to leave cargo space on the table for the right items.
That said — the Condensates margin at 185% was real and the buy depth held. That's not always guaranteed. If Jita's buy side had thinned out, those 216 units wouldn't have moved cleanly. The run worked.
The takeaway: the cargo optimizer is a floor, not a ceiling — when a small number of items are doing most of the work, concentrating capital there and ignoring the low-margin filler can double your actual return versus the "Optimal" suggestion.
FAQ
Is it safe to haul through Rancer in EVE?
In a blockade runner with a cloak, it was manageable — hold cloak on arrival, watch the grid, pick your moment. In a regular industrial or a freighter, the 9 recent kills on that gate are a serious warning. Either use a covert ops industrial, take the longer southern route through Rens, or pay for a freighter fleet escort. Rancer isn't random danger; it's a predictable camp on a predictable pipe.
How does Hek compare to Dodixie as a trading hub?
Hek is smaller but has real regional demand, particularly for Minmatar faction goods and ore-adjacent items. The pipe to Jita is shorter than from Dodixie but runs through Rancer. Dodixie connects more cleanly to Jita via the southern route. If you're flying covert ops and comfortable with lowsec, Hek has some of the better margins precisely because fewer traders bother with the route.
